Never lifted a barbell? Perfect.

Powerlifting can look intimidating from the outside, with heavy weights, chalk everywhere and loud music. The truth is that it's one of the most welcoming sports around, and everyone in this gym started exactly where you are now.

This session is built for people who are curious but not sure where to begin. There's no ego and no pressure to lift heavy, and no question is too basic. You'll leave knowing how to perform the three big lifts safely, and you'll feel confident walking into any gym.

What we'll cover

  • The squat: finding your stance, bracing your core and hitting depth comfortably

  • The bench press: setting up on the bench, where the bar should touch, and how to lift safely with a spotter

  • The deadlift: conventional or sumo, and how to lift from the floor without straining your back

  • Warming up properly, so you feel ready rather than stiff

  • How to start a simple programme you can follow on your own

Who it's for

  • Complete beginners who've never touched a barbell

  • Gym-goers who've stuck to machines and want to try free weights

  • Anyone thinking about entering their first competition

  • People coming back after a long break who want a fresh start

You don't need to be strong, fit or experienced. Just come as you are.

How the two hours run

  1. Welcome and warm-up (15 minutes): meet the coach and the group, and get moving

  2. Squat (30 minutes): technique, practice and individual feedback

  3. Bench press (30 minutes): setup, safety and spotting

  4. Deadlift (30 minutes): finding the stance that suits you

  5. Questions and next steps (15 minutes): ask us anything, and leave with a plan

What to bring

  • Comfortable gym clothes you can move in

  • Flat-soled shoes (trainers with thick cushioning make lifting harder)

  • A water bottle

  • Any questions you've been too shy to ask anywhere else

We provide all the equipment, including bars, plates, belts and chalk.

"One of the friendliest gyms I’ve been to - Helen and Jason were so welcoming from the second I walked in and the equipment here is the best. So pleased I found this place!!"

Places are deliberately limited so everyone gets proper one-to-one attention. If something comes up, you can cancel up to 48 hours before for a full refund.

We can't wait to see you on the platform.
